Derric was born on January 15, 1968, and attended Atlanta Public School prior to attending The Northfield Mount Hermon School in Northfield, MA.  In 1986, Derric entered The University of Pennsylvania, where he was a mentee of the late Judge A. Leon Higginbotham and a member of an Ivy League Championship football team.  Derric graduated from Penn in 1990. 

From 1990 to 1992 Derric was on active duty in the United States Army.  In 1996, Derric graduated from The University of Dayton Law School where he was a Dean Scholarship recipient and member of the National Mock Trial Team.  He was an active member of the American Bar Association Diversity Committee and president of the Black Law Student Association (BLSA).  During law school Derric completed an Externship for United States District Court Judge Walter Herbert Rice. 

He is very active in the community and is involved with several committees with various legal associations, including but not limited to, the Atlanta Bar Association, Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, Georgia Bar Association, and the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College.  His prior affiliations include Henry, Spiegel, Fried & Milling, Evert & Weathersby, and KPMG Peat-Marwick.  Derric's practice areas include personal injury, products liability, toxic torts, and wrongful death.

Recently, Derric was honored by the Daily Report Newspaper's On The Rise article "14 Under 40" as one of the top attorneys under forty, and featured in Georgia's Super Lawyers - 2007 Rising Stars Edition. He was also a speaker at the Bobby Lee Cook Symposium and at the National Medical Association's 2007 Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly in Honolulu, Hawaii. Additionally, Derric began teaching a course on Trial Practice at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School in August 2007.

He and his wife Freda reside in Atlanta.
